— Original Post Follows —

MaKey MaKey is a revolutionary new way to turn everyday objects into controllers for computers. So, you could play video games with bits of Play Doh arranged how ever you like. Or you could draw a control console exactly to your liking to manage a software package…and you can draw it on a simple piece of paper with a pencil! It’s also possible to use objects as sensors to trigger automated processes, like taking a picture when your cat drinks water. Developed by Eric Rosenbaum and Jay Silver of the MIT Media Lab, this invention has the potential to completely transform the art and science of user interface.

When the project is launched, I’ll post more video about this, shot today at the Media Lab. In the meantime, enjoy the video below and stand by for some big announcements coming soon on this project!

When I was Executive Director of the eCitizen Foundation, with Daniel Bennett as CTO and Dan Combs as CEO, we collaborated with the Kantara Initiative and then OpenID Foundation of Japan to research and design a Patient ID Service. More information on this project is available at the Kantara Healthcare Identity Assurance Workgroup web page. The design project concluded with an online report, which is archived here. Major artifacts from the project included:

In Collaboration with Kantara, a Project Proposal (cached)

After Kantara contract with sponsor OpenID Foundation of Japan to fund PIDS research, MIT accepted the PIDS project as one of it’s focus areas for New Media Medicine, resulting in this Concept Video to Guide the Research and Design

To Organize the Work, a Project Plan was developed and agreed by the principals.

A Project Launch Event was offered to publicize the project and invite participation.

Above is a video demo of how rules can be literally integrated so that the authoritative document containing the applicable legal rules, as well as the business rules, will explicitly and traceably conform to the technical rules, and the technical rules at run-time, cause applications and services in the scope of the system to comply with the rules.

An example of the types of System Rules that could apply this integration of business, legal and technical rules can be found at the Model Trust Framework page.

An example early work around applying the business, legal and technical method to use cases, in this instance related to federated identity, can be found at: http://civics.com/use-cases/

This page will detail an approach to the alignment of business, legal and technical rules in more detail over time, with updates to the content of the post.

NIST has released it’s request for proposals for award of an NSTIC Steering Group Secretariat Cooperative Agreement-Federal Funding Opportunity.

NIST has released it’s request for proposals for award of an NSTIC Steering Group Secretariat Cooperative Agreement-Federal Funding Opportunity. More information on this is available at NIST and identity community information about NSTIC can be found at www.nstic.us.

Bottom line: The government is seeking “Secretariat” services to stand up the governance body for NSTIC, and is prepared to pay $2-2.5 million for an expected 2 year plan. They seek professional secretariat services and prefer not to award the project to an organization with a direct or vested interest in the Identity Ecosystem. Ideally, in a project like this, more detail would be know about the short and medium term expected Identity Ecosystem itself, so that governance could be developed in sync with the needs of the system. However, in an understandable push to move forward while the opportunity, momentum and resources for NSTIC exists, several threads are being pursued simultaneously. Given that, hopefully the winning bidder will include one or more milestones for reflection, general feedback and discussion on key decision points by stakeholders along the path toward standing up the governance function.

The document is quite short and simple, providing complete information on the format and administrative requirements for the bid, and defining the evaluation criteria according to the following high level requirements:

a. Quality and Relevance of the Work Plan (0 to 40 points)

b. Methodology for Administering the Steering Group (0 to 30 points)

c. Qualifications of the Proposer (0 to 20 points)

d. Resource Availability and Future Planning (0 to 10 points)

Each section contains several more details criteria, but part of what I found especially interesting was the how the criteria requested proposals that:

Tied the governance to the NSTIC Guiding Principles (section V.1.a.3 “Provide and maintain infrastructure to support transparency, openness, and alignment with the Guiding Principles in all Steering Group Operations”);

Ensure all meetings can be conducted online (section V.1.a.5 “Enable all Steering Group plenary, Standing Committee, and Working Group meetings to be conducted virtually” and section V.1.b.4 requesting details on the method for conducting virtual meetings);

Ensuring all proceedings are “Open” and “Transparent” (section V.1.b.3 “The proposed methodology for ensuring Steering Group operations are open and transparent and responsive to changes in the Identity Ecosystem” and V.1.a.3);

Ensure representation from and consensus by all stakeholder groups (section V.1.b.1 “The proposed methodology for ensuring representation from all key stakeholder communities” and V.1.b.2 and V.1.a.4 both also focus on stakeholder representation and facilitation toward consensus).

The request for proposals also indicates the winning bidder will have a method to appoint an “Identity Ecosystem Ombudsman” (section V.1.a.7) and strongly emphasizes the need for the winning bidder to have a solid plan for the governance body to be self sustaining after the government money runs out:

“Assist the Steering Group in transitioning to a self-sustaining organization”

“the likelihood that the approach would be successful in facilitating creation of a sustainable Steering Group that implements the NSTIC vision” and

“plan to obtain and/or leverage additional or external resources or support as needed to complete the project and to transition the Steering Group to a self-sustaining organization post-project”

The deadline for submission is April 11, 2012 and the award is expected to be made in May, 2012. This is an exciting and important benchmark for NSTIC and, if all goes well, will soon enable the realization of the President’s lofty goals for a secure, effective, privacy-enhancing and user-centered Identity Ecosystem for the United States.
